Intervista con Shāman. Racconta della sua musica e del suo EP “CITY MOTION”

Shāman è un’artista russo (Mosca) alla costante ricerca dei suoni, dei rumori, delle vibrazioni dell’ambiente che lo circonda. Mescolando queste sonorità, come fossero degli ingredienti, genera un elisir, di emozioni e sensazioni con lo scopo di iniziare l’ascoltatore verso un viaggio spirituale.

“City Motion” l’ EP uscito a settembre è la chiara esperienza che, Alexandr Korneev (vero nome di Shāman), racconta e illustra con la sua musica ambient e scie techno un viaggio emotivo nella realtà più cinica e spietata: quella della città.

Definendo musicisti e dj di oggi come gli sciamani moderni, Shāman cerca di portare in scena il farmaco migliore (la musica), per guarire, o meglio riportare lo spirito a vagare, liberamente, privo di catene e limiti di motricità (motion).

MM: Ciao Shāman, grazie per la tua disponibilità! Iniziamo con il tuo EP “City Motion” pubblicato a settembre. Nel disco la musica rappresenta il riflesso della vita nella città moderna, quel lato invisibile del movimento e delle sensazioni. Dicci di più, cosa significa?

SHĀMAN: Ciao e grazie per l’invito! Mi piace registrare suoni e farlo quasi ogni giorno. Tutto nelle situazioni quotidiane – rumori, suoni della natura, strade. E l’idea sperimentale originaria di «City Motion» proviene da diverse sessioni di registrazioni di questo tipo. Quando ascolti le registrazioni dalle strade, noti piccole cose e dettagli che di solito bypassano la nostra attenzione. Nella vita di tutti i giorni facciamo la maggior parte delle cose inconsciamente, senza prestare attenzione a ciò che facciamo e perché, cosa succede intorno a noi nel mondo. Quindi, per me, questo EP è il tentativo di evidenziare questi piccoli dettagli quotidiani e renderli il centro della storia. 

MM: All’interno dell’EP i titoli dati ai brani sono molto chiari: CITY, MOTION, CHOICE, TRIP, LIFE. L’ambient che costituisce lo stile preponderante in questo album, è perfettamente allineato con il concetto di vita, viaggio, movimento, scelto all’interno della città. Come scegli le emozioni da condividere? E quanto è difficile farle emergere in un contesto così cinico e freddo come quello della città?

SHĀMAN: È una domanda molto interessante e giusta. Hai detto bene che la città moderna è spesso un posto cinico. Così ho deciso di mostrare questo lato delle cose, ma quasi di portarle ad uno stato caldo e stimolante. Perché per me emozioni – e-motions-, l’energia del movimento. La musica dovrebbe portare uno stato positivo, costringere le persone a non arrendersi in situazioni difficili e ad ispirare la creazione. In conclusione, per portare l’energia della vita, che può essere multiforme per ciascuno di noi. Nella routine quotidiana sto cercando di concentrarmi sulla musica e le nuove idee almeno 1 ora. È già diventata un’abitudine. Penso che questo sia l’unico modo per “caricare le batterie” e concentrarsi sulle emozioni positive.

MM: Oltre l’ambient, si denota un profondo stile techno, guidato anche dai sintetizzatori. Possiamo dire che queste sono le tre parole chiave, ma vorrei aggiungere una quarta: Spiritualità. Prima di tutto con il tuo nome d’arte “Shāman” (sciamano) e per la creazione di queste atmosfere quasi eteree. Sei d’accordo? Perché hai scelto questo nome d’arte?

SHĀMAN: È bello sentire un tale feedback sulla spiritualità. È difficile per me valutare, in qualche modo la propria musica. (Spero che alla gente piaccia) Il nome .. Beh, sono interessato alle tradizioni della musica mondiale insieme alla ricerca scientifica sulla musica e alla sua influenza sulle persone. Nell’antica Cina, ad esempio, alcune frequenze e armonie musicali erano un tabù a causa della influenza negativa sullo stato umano e persino sullo stile di vita. Penso che musicisti e dj siano oggi sciamani moderni, che controllano le emozioni e lo stato umano con la musica. Anche le emozioni sono la cosa principale che gli sciamani del mondo tradizionale operano nelle loro sessioni di guarigione. 

MM: Ti piace suonare anche con altri stili, ad esempio la deep house. il riferimento è al remix che hai fatto per Marco Calanni e Fabio Mazzei per il loro brano “The power of words”. Com’è nata questa collaborazione e cosa pensi della scena elettronica italiana?

SHĀMAN: Una volta Marco mi ha scritto su Facebook: “mi è piaciuto il post con i brani di Sight Below”. Da lì abbiamo incominciato a collaborare. Ho lavorato molto con le cose ambient e ho pensato che il remix potesse essere il modo migliore per cambiare il contesto e lavorare su un progetto interessante. Un’altra esperienza interessante per unirti a cose profonde e ambient. La registrazione del discorso di Obama usando in questa traccia mi ha dato l’idea di fare il video ironico per questo remix.

Ringrazio Marco per la collaborazione e questa esperienza. È successo che conosco il lato ipnotico dell’elettronica italiana – parlo di Donato Dozzy e della sua collaborazione con Giuseppe Tillieci (Neel)-  «Voices from the lake». Questo progetto atmosferico ha una grande influenza su di me. La maggior parte per la sintesi di diversi synth e beat techno ambientale.

MM: “Ogni giorno ti muovi per la città per registrare i suoni e le melodie ambientali”. Quali strumenti usi per farlo? E in quali posti sei più incline a registrare?

SHĀMAN: Di solito uso il registratore Tascam DR-05 per registrazioni sul campo e mobile home studio (set comune con scheda audio, tastiera midi e ableton a bordo). Per dj set e performance ora ho 2 controller Allen e Heath Xone K2, mappati su Recordbox e Ableton. Molto adatto per i viaggi. Tutta la roba potrebbe essere messa nello zaino. Con questa roba, la maggior parte delle registrazioni per l’EP “City Motion” sono state fatte per le strade di Mosca e San Pietroburgo. In pista Choice suona il disco del cinema di Mosca «Ottobre». Questa voce – «Per favore, fai una scelta | pozhaluysta sdelayte vybor »appartiene alla biglietteria automatica. Anche l’ultimo posto interessante dove ho fatto registrazioni sul campo sono state le montagne in Russia, Sochi. Non ci sono mai stato prima, aria pulita, posto molto tranquillo e anche un alto contrasto con il lavoro sulla musica in città.

MM: L’album è prodotto da Cold Tears Records, etichetta lituana. Il loro obiettivo è fornire musica di qualità senza tenere conto delle tendenze. Quanto sposi questa filosofia e quanto è importante per un artista essere libero?

SHĀMAN: Penso che la cosa principale è fare nella vita ciò che ti piace e hai dentro te stesso. Potrebbe essere musica o qualcos’altro. In questo modo puoi dare risultati impressionanti e renderti felice. Quindi in questo caso la filosofia di ColdTear è vicina a me. Ma abbiamo iniziato a lavorare insieme in modo più intuitivo senza corrispondere alla nostra visione.

MM:  In Russia la stella del momento è sicuramente Nina Kraviz. Come antagonista mi piacerebbe credere a Dasha Rush anche se hanno stili musicali e mixaggi completamente diversi. Inoltre parliamo di due donne. Prima di tutto, ti chiedo cosa pensi di questi artisti in particolare, ma soprattutto cosa rappresentano. Nina rappresenta la tendenza, Dasha potrebbe rappresentarlo. Dove ti posizioni in questa prospettiva? La musica rimane una passione o è un mezzo per fare soldi?

SHĀMAN: Nina e anche Nikita Zabelin sono sicuramente l’headliner della scena elettronica russa nel mondo. Ma è difficile rimanere un trendsetter e anche creativo. Come ho detto prima, è importante fare cose preferite. Ottimo se il tuo lavoro sarà la tendenza del futuro. E in questo caso i soldi appariranno da soli senza il tuo sforzo extra. Quindi per me i soldi e le tendenze sono gli strumenti necessari per la creazione.

Dasha. Può sembrare un po ‘strano, ma conosco Dasha da Donato Dozzy, i loro concerti sugli stessi eventi. Dasha è nel suo viaggio nella musica e quel suono è più originale per me.  

MM: Chi ascolti di solito?

SHĀMAN: Mi piacciono diversi stili di musica a seconda dell’umore e della situazione. La maggior parte del tempo ascolto l’elettronica ambientale e profonda. Mi piace anche la musica progressive house e cinematica. Se si nominano diversi artisti, ci sono: Carbon Based Lifeforms, Phaeleh, Marcus Fischer, Sight Below, Solid Stone.  

MM: In che modo l’ambiente e la cultura russa hanno influenzato la percezione del suono e la tua personalità da includere nelle produzioni?

SHĀMAN: La maggior parte del tempo in Russia lo trascorro a Mosca. Questa città oggi è un trendsetter e per me è la migliore del mondo per la sua energia. Il nome della traccia Motion: è tutto. Anche in Russia c’è una natura terrificante con stagioni luminose che influenzano l’umore e l’ispirazione. Inverno dub, primavera ambientale, estate piena di energia e beats, autunno profondo.

MM: Progetti futuri di Alexandr Korneev?

SHĀMAN: Presto l’intenzione di pubblicare un sequel di «City Motion». Ci saranno diverse versioni autonome nei prossimi mesi. Uno stile un po ‘diverso, più battiti. Anche il viaggio in montagna di Sochi ispira a fare un album – combinazione di ambient, dub electronic e field recording.

Tells about his music and his EP “CITY MOTION”

Shāman is a Russian artist (Moscow) constantly looking for sounds, noises, the vibrations of the environment that surrounds him. Mixing these sounds, as if they were ingredients, generates an elixir, of emotions and sensations with the aim of starting the listener towards a spiritual journey.

“City Motion” the EP released in September is the clear experience that, Alexandr Korneev (real name of Shāman), tells and illustrates with his ambient music and techno scree an emotional journey in the most cynical and ruthless reality: that of the city.

Defining musicians and today’s DJs as modern shamans, Shāman tries to stage the best drug (music), to heal, or better to bring the spirit to roam freely, free of chains and limits of motion (motion).

MM: Hello Alexandr and thank you for your time. Let’s start  with your EP City Motion released in September. Your music is the reflection of life in the modern city, the invisible side of movement and sensations. Tell us more, what does this mean?

SHĀMAN: Hello and thanks for invitation! I like to record sounds and make it almost every day. Everything in daily situations – noises, nature sounds, streets. And the original experimental idea of «City Motion» have come  from several sessions of such field recordings. When you listen recordings from the streets, you notice little things and details that usually pass by our attention. In everyday life we do most of things unconsciously, without paying attention what we doing and why, what is going on around us in the world.
So, for me, this EP is the attempt to highlight this little daily details and make them the centre of the story.

MM: Inside the EP the names given to the tracks are very clear: CITY, MOTION, CHOICE, TRIP, LIFE. The ambient that constitutes the preponderant style in this album, is perfectly aligned with the concept of life, travel, movement, chosen within the city. How do you choose the emotions to share? And how difficult is it to make them emerge in a context so cynical and cold as that of the city?

SHĀMAN: It is very interesting and right question. Well.. You said right that modern city is often a cynical place. So I decided to show this side of things, but almost bring the warm and inspiring state. Because for me emotions – e-motions, the energy of motion. Music should bring positive state, make people not to give up in difficult situations and to inspire for creation. In conclusion to bring the energy of life, which can be many-sided for each of us.

In daily routine I’m trying to concentrate on music and new ideas at least 1 hour. It already has become a habit. I think this is the only way to «charge the batteries» and focus on positive emotions.

MM: Beyond the ambient music, it denotes a deep techno style, also driven by synthesizers. We can say that these are the three key words, but I would add a fourth: Spirituality. First of all by your Shaman name of art and for the creation of these almost ethereal atmospheres. Do you agree? Why you choose this name?

SHĀMAN: Nice to hear such feedback about the spirituality. It’s difficult for me to rate somehow own music. (Hope people will like it)The name.. Well, I’m interested in world music traditions along with scientific research about music and it influence on people. In ancient China, for example, some frequencies and musical harmonies were on tabu because of there negative influence of human state and even way of life. 

I think, that musicians and djs nowdays are modern shamans, that control emotions and human state with music.  Also emotions is the main thing which traditional world shamans are operate in their heal sessions.

MM: Even if you like even with other styles, for example the deep house. Clear is the reference to the remix you did for Marco Calanni and Fabio Mazzei for their track “The power of words”. How was this collaboration born and what do you think of the Italian electronic scene?

SHĀMAN: Once Marco just wrote me on Facebook, liked the post with Sight Below tracks) I worked a lot with ambient stuff that days and thought that the remix might be the good way to change the context and work on interesting project. Also an interesting experience to join deep house and ambient things. Obama’s speech recording using in this track bring me an idea to make the ironic video for this remix.

Thanks Marco for collaboration and this experience. It so happened that I know most the hypnotic side of Italian electronic – I talk about Donato Dozzy and his collaboration with Giuseppe Tillieci «Voices from the Lake». This atmospheric project make big influence on me. Most for synthesis of different synths and ambient techno beat.

MM: “Every day you move through the city to record the sounds, the ambient melodies”. What tools do you use to do it? And in which places are you most inclined to register?

SHĀMAN: Usually I use Tascam DR-05 recorder for field recordings and mobile home studio (common set with soundcard, midi keyboard  and ableton on board). For dj sets and performings now I have 2 Allen and Heath Xone K2 controllers, mapped on Recordbox and Ableton. Very suitable for trips. All stuff might be put in backpack. With this stuff most of recordings for «City Motion» EP were made on the streets of Moscow and Saint Petersburg. In track Choice sounds the record from the Moscow cinema «October». This voice – «Please, make a choice | pozhaluysta sdelayte vybor» belongs to the ticket machine. Also last interesting place where I made field recordings were the mountains in Russia, Sochi. Never being there before, clear air, very quiet place and also high contrast with working on music in City.

MM: The album is produced by Cold Tears Records, Lithuanian label. Their goal is to provide quality music without taking trends and trends into account. How much do you marry this philosophy and how important is it for an artist to be free?

SHĀMAN: I think the main thing – is to do in life what you like inside yourself. It may be music or something else. This way allows to give impressive result and makes your happy in life. So in this case the ColdTear philosophy is close to me. But we started to work together most intuitive without matching our vision.

MM: In Russia the star of the moment is definitely Nina Kraviz. As an antagonist I would like to believe Dasha Rush even if they have completely different styles of music and mixing. In addition we talk about two women. First of all, I ask you what you think of these artists in particular, but especially what they represent. Nina represents the trend, Dasha could represent it. Where do you place yourself in this perspective? Does music remain a passion or does it fit to make money?

SHĀMAN: Nina and Nikita Zabelin certainly are the headliners of Russia in the world electronic scene. But it is difficult to stay a trendsetter and to be creative as well. As I said before it’s important to do favourite things. Great if your work will be the trend in the future. And In this case the money will be appear by themselves without your extra effort. So for me money and trends are the attendant instruments in creation. Dasha. It may be sounds a little strange but I know Dasha from Donato Dozzy, their gigs on the same events. Dasha is on her own trip in the music and that sound is more original for me.

MM:Who usually listen?

SHĀMAN: I like different styles of music depends on mood and situation. Most of time listen ambient and deep electronic. Also like progressive house and cinematic music.

MM: How has the environment and the Russian culture influenced the perception of sound and your personality to be included in the productions?

SHĀMAN: Most of time in Russia i spend in Moscow. This city today is a trendsetter  and for me is the best in the world for it energy. The track name Motion – it’s about it. Also in Russia there is terrific nature with bright seasons which make influence for mood and inspiration. Dub winter, ambient spring, full of energy and beats summer, deep autumn.

MM: Future projects by Alexandr Korneev.

SHĀMAN: Soon I plan to release a «City Motion» sequel. It will be several self releases during next few month. A little different style, more beats. Also the Sochi mountain journey inspire to make an album – combination of ambient, dub electronic and field recordings.
